Furman, Doug (Compiled by). Writing the History of Mathematical Notations by Sister Mary Leontius Schulte; Albrecht Heefer
A reprint of a Sister Mary Leontius' 1935, Univ. of Michigan, PhD dissertation which fills in some of the historical gaps in the works of Florian Cajori's A History of Mathematical Notations and Johannes Tropfke's Geschichte Der Elementar-Mathematik in Systematischer Darstellung (History of Elementary Mathematics in Systematic Representation), both of whom are towering figures in the history of mathematics. Furman's primary contribution to the book was locating online scanned images of the various 15th, 16th & 17th century mathematical texts and selecting the various "clips" (almost 300 of them) to include in the updated book. This way readers could see for themselves how the symbols, many now defunct, originally appeared when published 300 to 500+ years ago. The earliest image in the book is a title page from 1491 (prior to Columbus' landing in the New World!).
