Faculty DEISJ Committee Charge

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Logo Ulster County Community College

The mission of the DEISJ Committee is to support the college’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of college life. We move forward with urgency and purpose to help faculty achieve equity and inclusion in all our classes and interactions with students, staff and each other. We strive to create an environment where issues of inequity are discussed and addressed.

The role of a Senate DEISJ Committee would be to support faculty in moving forward in our institutional goals of equity and inclusion. The committee will also serve as faculty representation to support the efforts and programs of our Diversity Officer.

  • Work with institutional research and faculty to gain an understanding of equity gaps in student achievement
  • Provide education and understanding as to how our courses might be inequitable, e.g. testing examples
  • Work with faculty to ensure that our curriculum is diverse, including literature we are presenting, even examples in math class
  • Be a resource for faculty to help them ensure their courses are equitable
  • Work with CTL on training/support/help for faculty who want to better address diversity and inclusion in the classroom
  • Serve as a resource on how cultural and societal inequities impact learning
  • Serve as a resource on the impact of trauma on learning – (e.g. NSW)
  • Provide resources to help increase comfort in participating in discussions about these issues
