Human Services Tracks at SUNY Ulster

Direct Support Professional Certificate

The Direct Support Practice Certificate Program trains practitioners to provide direct service and support to individuals, families and groups in the community. Students learn multiple roles of direct support workers in public and private sectors.

Graduates of the program will have skills that are in use in virtually any human services setting. The program incorporates skill standards established on a nationwide basis through the Community Support Skills Standards Project, thereby ensuring consistency in direct support service.

  • Group homes for people with intellectual and/or development disabilities
  • Day treatment programs for persons with mental illness
  • Residential treatment facilities
  • Eldercare and respite programs
  • Foster care agencies

Human Services Associates in Applied Science (Career)

Students who complete this program earn an Associate in Applied Science degree as well as the certificate in Direct Care Practice. The program is sufficiently comprehensive to qualify graduates for a variety of entry‐level positions in public and private sector human service agencies.

  • Probation Assistant
  • Income eligibility examiner

  • Child care worker in residential facilities

Obtaining a Bachelor's or higher degree after completing this program will qualify you for positions of increased scope and responsibility, including supervisory and administrative positions in fields such as social work, counseling, education and mental health.

Human Services Associates in Science (Transfer)

Students who complete this program earn an Associate in Science degree, with a strong academic foundation for future study in the fields of human services, psychology, and social work.

A graduate of this program who then earns a baccalaureate or higher degree will be qualified for direct service, supervisory, and administrative positions in fields such as social work, human services counseling, education, and mental health.
